Dr. Osbel Almora completed his PhD (2020) at the Friedrich Alexander Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló (2020-2022), and Universidad Pablo de Olavide of Seville (2020), Spain. In 2023, as a Juan de La Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow, he joined the Universitat Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona where he holds a Tenure Track Professor (Lector) position since 2025. His research activities focus on characterization and modeling of semiconductor and energy devices, including, solar cells, X-ray detectors, light emitting diodes, and pseudocapacitors.

The 8th international conference for next generation solar energy (NGSE8) was held in Erlangen, Germany, between December 12 and 14, 2023, with the participation of several world-class experts in the field. The organizers of the event were Carolin M. Sutter-Fella, from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Molecular Foundry, USA; Karen Forberich from the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HIERN), DEU; Osbel Almora, from URV, ESP; and Christoph J. Brabec from HIERN and the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, DEU.
On December 14, 2023, the 2nd emerging photovoltaic workshop (ePVW2) took place, with the opening presentation of the 4th emerging PV report by Osbel Almora. Subsequent talks were presented by several members of the Emerving-pv.org initiative, including Rene Janssen, Kenjiro Fukuda, Maria A. Loi, and Barry P. Rand. Osbel was also organizer and chair of the first session of the ePVW2.

The President of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona, Prof. Josep Pallarès Marzal, grants Dr. Karen Acosta with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award for his PhD thesis “Engineering of photonic structures based on nanoporous anodic alumina as an optical sensing platform“, supervised by Prof. Lluis Francisco Marsal Garví.
The thesis successfully fulfilled the requirements of the doctoral program in Technologies for Nanosystems, Bioengineering and Energy, within the academic year 2021-2022.
The award ceremony took place last November 28, 2023, at the Celler de Vila-Seca.
